CO2 Footprint

Introduction

As a works contractor, Van Leeuwen Zwanenburg Sloopwerken specialises in renovation demolition. This requires the capacity to work per square metre. It is also mainly indoors. As far back as 2006, this led to the idea of an electrically powered mini-excavator in collaboration with a mechanical engineer. The original reason for switching to electrification was to prevent workers from being exposed to diesel engine emissions (DME), so for occupational health reasons. It was not yet apparent at the time that this would an additional advantage in terms of energy consumption because the required power was supplied by diesel-driven generators. CE marking was a problem that was only overcome in 2010 with the first factory-made electrically powered mini-excavators.

Besides this transition to improve working conditions, there was another development that involved the replacement of diesel-driven air compressors for powering pneumatic sledgehammers with electrically-driven compressors in 2017 and perhaps the most dramatic development was the replacement of the many halogen construction lamps with LED carousel lights in 2018. Halogen lighting is pleasant in winter but compared to the light output the heat loss is also an aspect of the transition aimed at improving working conditions.

Until that point, the company had had an intuitive approach to electrification, which led to the realisation that electrification was not just a way of improving working conditions but that it also had a positive effect on energy consumption. If companies want to implement this consistently in their business operations, they must tackle it systematically.

After quality management, health management, safety management and environmental management, energy management is the logical extension of the existing structure of the Business Management System. It lends itself well to integration and cost awareness.

The 2021 Footprint is also the reference year:

The following footprint was determined on the basis of the energy survey. The improvement plan is based on 2020 as a reference year.

The 2020-2025 energy reduction plan

Opportunities for energy reduction can be deduced from the energy survey. These opportunities can be described in terms of quality and determined in terms of quantity.

The following measures are planned to achieve the reduction target over the next five years.

Participation

To realise the strategic objectives, it is necessary to participate in knowledge networks and industry initiatives. After all, when we share knowledge we all progress.

VLZS is a member of VERAS. This trade association has a “Sector Initiative CO2 Performance Ladder”.

We are also a member of the AYOP knowledge platform that brings together contractors, schools, governments and designers in the Amsterdam port region with the focus on sustainability in general.

The individual objectives will be emphasised in the vocational training courses and will focus on raising awareness in the field of energy savings. The required volumes will be determined during the upcoming assessment periods.

Initiatives

The replacement of the fleet began in 2017 with the best available technology, electrically-driven and battery-powered construction machines. With 2020 as the reference year, only the fleet of delivery vans now needs to be replaced.

Van Leeuwen Sloopwerken Zwanenburg sees this as an opportunity to start using fully electric vans for a number of its permanent maintenance contracts.

The gradual introduction of hybrid passenger cars started with the replacement of the lease cars. These initiatives will definitely lead to a more far-reaching reduction than specified in the 2020-2025 Energy Reduction Plan.
